Global Mamas

Global Mamas is the brand name for products produced by a co-operative of individually owned businesses in Cape Coast in Ghana. It is managed through the not-for-profit organisation Women in Progress. All proceeds from Global Mamas sales go directly to the women producing the products and to the business development programs carried out by Women in Progress.
Global Mamas is recognised as a fair trade manufacturer and distributor by the Fair Trade Federation (FTF) - a non-profit organisation in the United States comprising an association of businesses that follow fair trade principles.

APPROACH

• Ensures that each woman-owned business in the networkmeets the high quality standards of international consumers.

•  Enables the economic independence of women in Africa by promoting their traditional skills in producing handmade batik textiles and recycled glass beads.
  

•  Helps African women establish export markets and manage their growing businesses through innovative business strategies.
  

SUPPORTING FAIR TRADE PRACTICES

• Global Mamas ensures women are paid a living wage enabling them to truly improve their standard of living.
  

•  For the past five years 40% of annual revenue was paid each year in wages to the women in the network.

All Global Mamas’ products are handcrafted, making each product slightly unique while maintaining the highest quality.

Global Mamas mission is to enhance the international marketplace with unique, high quality, African-made apparel, and at the same time provide sustainable livelihoods for women in Africa.

•  Women are paid upfront for completed products and receive financial assistance through raw materials revolving loan fund.

• When presented with economic opportunities, each Global Mama carefully invests her proceeds to ensure the advancement of her business, her employees and her family.
