bird textile
Bird is a range of luxury eco products for those who appreciate quality and style, and care about the planet in which they live. Designed by Rachel Bending, Birds’ exquisite collection of fabrics are all hand printed using water based dyes at her Byron Bay studio. All products in the range are manufactured using 100% renewable solar power, and Bird was recongised as Australia's first climate neutral business 4 years ago.
Rachel is from the UK originally, and studied textile design at the renowned Glasgow School of Art in the early 90’s. She spent several years working as an event director for Saatchi and Saatchi in London before emigrating to Australia in 2001 and has combined her passion for the environment with her training in design to create Bird.
Birds guiding principles are social harmony and environmental responsibility. It is part of their business ethos to promote low impact environmentally friendly local production. This takes place in Rachel's studio, and in the homes of co-workers who share the Bird principles and sew using solar power. Fabrics are printed using water based dyes from designs created inhouse, and all products are manufactured using solar power. Additional production materials are 100% natural & sourced from locally owned small businesses wherever possible. Bird also works with new company, Climate Friendly, to offset any carbon emissions created by their business.
Bird is the business of the future, today. Rachel's dedication to both design and the environment is not only commendable but a model for other Australian businesses. It can be done and Rachel is doing it.
